The next gym I have visited
is JD gym Coatbridge https://www.jdgyms.co.uk/gym/coatbridge/. This is the first commercial gym I have visited and while
the staff were still extremely friendly there was a big difference in terms of
the sense of community within the gym. In all of the privately owned gyms I’ve
been to there are always people chatting to each other and having catch ups whereas
here it seemed more like everyone was just there to workout so it depends what
you prefer I guess. The gym operates on a QR code system where you scan at the gate to gain entrance which seems like a fine system however once
you scan out you cant come back in straight away, meaning if you leave something
in your car you cant go get it which I didn’t love.
This gym looks huge from the outside however I would say it
does feel smaller once you are in it but that is probably just my unrealistic expectation of how big it was going to be because it is actually still massive, the machines are well spaced out with
enough room to put your things down and not feel like you are in anyone’s way. This
gym is also split into different sections with a huge cardio area (the biggest I've seen), a section with loads of pin loaded machines, a plate loaded machine
section, spin studio, class studio, boxing room, squat racks, calisthenics
area, and a free weight area.
I trained legs this day and there is a good array of
machines to use including a hack squat, leg press and pendulum however these is
only one of each of these and for such a big and busy gym this can be quite inconvenient.
The day I went the same 4 men where on the leg press for 40mins and so I had to
miss out the movement. One of the big positives of this gym however is the
massive dumbbell rack there is at least 2 sets of every weight and more of the
most commonly used ones with at least 15 benches as well and the huge array of
cable machines on offer (at least 15) which means you never have to wait for
either of these.
Again this gym has fantastic female changing room with showers,
toilets, lockers and a sauna which was free to use with either a membership or
day pass so it gets points for that. The gym also offers two vending machines with
snacks and drinks. The car park is huge but when
I went half of it was blocked off which made it hard to find a space, and I can
see it being especially difficult at peak times as it is shared with a children’s
swimming lesson centre.
It costs £10 for a day pass and £24.99 monthly (£10 for your
first month) which includes classes, 24hr gym access and access to the sauna
with no contract. However, they are currently running a deal where if you go with
someone who has a membership and its your first time they will let you in for
free so I didn’t have to pay :). Overall I would give this gym a 7.5 out of 10
as while I enjoyed my session, this gym didn’t have the same feel as the others
of you could ask anyone for help and I could see it getting extremely busy with
a high chance of seeing someone you know as it is an extremely popular gym.
