The final gym I have visited for this gym review series is
Broadwood Gym in Cumbernauld. It is a council owned gym and is part of the
ActiveNL chain. This gym I will say was the least well-staffed and I didn’t speak
to a single staff member apart from the reception lady during my whole time
there, I also spoke to a member I know and he said the staff are hardly around
especially in the early mornings which I could see being a hinderance if
someone is quite new to the gym and needs some extra support. The gym operates
with a fob and gate system however there is always someone at reception if you
need to buy a day pass.
This was definitely the smallest gym I have been in in terms
of the main gym floor. Its only 1 room with a limited number of
machines however there is also a separate spin room and class room. There is 6
benches around the dumbbell area and 3 cable machines and only one of every
other type of machine which I could see as being quite frustrating at peak
times. However, they did have the first hack squat I have actually been okay
with and not felt like I was going to get stuck so it does get bonus points for
that. Again, the plate management in this gym is not the best with plates
scattered around the gym with some people even leaving plates on machines
giving the illusion that they are in use when they are not. However, one big positive
of this gym is the amount of cardio equipment there is at least 5 treadmills, bikes,
rows and 2 Stairmasters and even although this area was the busiest in the
whole gym there were still machines free.
Included in your membership is a range of classes, access to
all of the NL gyms and swimming pools so the membership is great for all round
fitness. I have attended a class at this gym before and can speak very highly
of the instructors as they are extremely welcoming and happy to help. Some other
notes, the car park is huge and you will have 0 issues finding a space even at
peak times as even when I used to train taekwondo there at 6pm and the football
was on I could still get parked and the changing rooms are extremely basic and have not changed since I used
to go to kids club when I was 8 lol.
It was the cheapest for a day pass at £6.50, and costs £35 a
month full price and £22 a month for students, which I could see as being a
little on the pricier side if you take into account only the gym however if you
are using the other facilities as well, I see it as well worth it. I did also have
to sign a waiver agreeing that I was liable for any injuries as I did not want
a gym induction something that they urge you to do even when entering on a day
pass so that is also something to keep in mind. Overall, I would give this gym
a 6.5 out of 10 due to the fact that it had a lack of staff to ask for help and
therefore that effected my overall comfortability and I could see it being extremely
busy at peak times due to the lack of space.
Excellent read! I found this blog very useful in understanding the different services available at gyms. Thanks for providing such valuable information!
